Belek – an Antalya jewel that’s the golfing capital of Turkey

Belek the golfing capital of Turkey 19 June 2022

Those familiar with Turkey’s Mediterranean coast will be able to tell you that Belek in Antalya is Turkey’s golfing capital. Championship courses nestle among exclusive private villas, with many properties in Belek custom-built to make the most of the local facilities.

The area has hosted some of the sport’s finest players. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose have strolled the Belek fairways, and even former US president Barack Obama played a round or two when he attended the G20 summit in Antalya in 2015.

The greens, bunkers and luxurious clubhouses are relatively new additions to a region which had already established itself as one of the Turquoise Coast’s tourist hubs. Visitors were falling in love with the area’s attractions by the 1980s, with numbers increasing over time.

Today, modern Belek comprises three distinct zones, each likely to appeal to a different kind of visitor. However, all three have a common factor – stunning holiday homes. If you’re thinking of investing in your own little piece of paradise, you’re bound to find something that suits you.

Best for beaches

Belek benefits from long, sandy, south-facing beaches stretching almost 14 miles, from the estuary of the river which drains the agricultural fields around Kozağaç and Kumköy west to another flowing into the sea, known locally as Köprüçay.

Luxury five-star hotels front onto the sand, many with specific themes, thrilling water parks and private health spas. They provide sumptuous all-inclusive accommodation, fine-dining and entertainment for guests all over the world and are the perfect place to stay if you’re visiting Antalya while you view potential properties.

The beach is a magnet for visitors who are seeking golden sands, clear waters and stunning views. If this appeals to you, a sea view villa might be just the thing.

A draw for golfers

It’s not obligatory to take to the fairways if you’re in Antalya, but many visitors come to the area precisely for that reason – golfing holidays are a booming sector of the region’s tourist trade. Some stay in luxury hotels, but many prefer to rent a private holiday villa in Belek. This means they’re close to the excellent golf courses and associated facilities while also enjoying a private pool and the freedom to do as they choose away from the greens.

Many of Belek’s properties enjoy beautiful views over the golf clubs. In all, there are close to a dozen different ones, their beautifully manicured greens and fairways lined with trees and dotted with ponds and lakes, providing a green swathe that separates the seafront hotels from the old town and more traditional accommodation inland.

Everyone will have their favourite course, but standards are universally high. And with so many to choose from in a compact space, you could holiday every year in Antalya for a decade and still not have played them all.

Looking inland to the old town

To the north side of the golf courses are newer developments of villas and apartments, privately owned and holiday lets. There are also some large holiday complexes such as the Land of Legends theme park.

This area is popular among visitors who prefer a more private stay or authentic Turkish accommodation, with agricultural fields beyond rolling towards the foothills of the mountains.

Belek itself boasts a rich blend of architecture, with shops, lokantas, coffee shops, bars and cafes dotted along tree-lined streets. The old clock tower and adjacent ruins are a reminder of the area’s heritage, encompassing the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

Additional attractions

Aside from its three distinct layers – the coast, the golf courses and the accommodation inland – Belek has other advantages which make it a desirable location both to live and for a holiday.

For a start, it’s only around a half-hour drive from Antalya’s International Airport – perfect for those who prefer not to endure a prolonged transfer on arrival or departure from Turkey. It also offers easy access to all the facilities at Lara Beach, just eight miles to the west, and to Antalya city centre with its contemporary shopping malls and facilities.

There are even more beachside venues east at Side, while activities such as scuba diving, paragliding, white-water rafting, mountain biking and trekking are readily available locally for thrill-seekers.

Property in Belek

If you’ve fallen in love with the area and are considering buying property in Belek, either for your exclusive use or as a holiday home to rent out, what would you expect to pay?

It depends on size, location and specification, of course, but as a rule of thumb it’s possible to find two and three-bedroom apartments for under £200,000. Even condominium villas with access to pools and gardens can be found for below £250,000, while private detached homes with their own pools and grounds tend to be above that. Of course, the more luxurious properties will command higher premiums.
