When people talk about Antalya, two things generally spring to mind. One is the weather – the clement Mediterranean climate that means there are few cold days, even in the heart of winter. The other is the number of outstanding beaches, many boasting Blue Flag status, with stretches of golden sand bordering clear blue waters. Both these factors play a key part in the decision to buy property in Antalya.

However, head inland and you’ll find plenty to do away from the seafront, too. The Taurus Mountains curve protectively around the Bay of Antalya, offering a mix of stunning scenery and outdoor activities that entice you to venture off the beaten track and discover your own favourite places.

On top of the world

For a unique perspective on the Antalya region, the stunning panoramic views from the top of Tahtalı Dağı (Tah-ta-luh Da-uh) are hard to beat. Don’t worry if you’re not much of a mountain climber, though – there’s a far easier way to enjoy the scenery.

The Olympos Telerifik, or cable car, will carry you comfortably to the summit, allowing you to enjoy your surroundings as you go. It’s open all year round, except during severe weather, so it makes a great out-of-season trip.

Tahtalı rises 2,365m above sea level. The peaks are covered in snow for most of the year, except in summer, so it’s a good idea to take some warm clothing. Once at the top there are observation decks from which to appreciate the views, and a café where you can enjoy refreshments.

To round off the day, after the return trip back down the mountain, nearby Ulupınar makes a great pit-stop before you head back home. Some of the riverside restaurants have fish farms you can visit, and all offer freshly caught trout and a range of delicious local dishes.

Take to the slopes

You might not consider south west Turkey a prime skiing destination, but you’d be surprised. The winter resort of Saklikent, on Bakırlıdağı (Bak-ur-luh-da-uh) is around 45km from Antalya city and has a great reputation.

It offers around 120 days of skiing each year between mid-December and mid-April, with an average snow thickness of between 100cm to 230cms. At its peak, it has been known to reach 5m. The days are mostly sunny, with temperatures rarely below -5°C; nights are cooler, of course.

There are around 10km of pistes at varying altitudes to suit different abilities. The ski school offers skiing and snowboarding lessons, and there are extensive catering facilities. There’s also a range of accommodation, including a hotel with a health and wellness centre, so it’s perfect if you feel like taking a proper break from your home in Antalya.

Fabulous falls

One of the Antalya area’s most breath-taking natural wonders, the Düden Waterfalls are definitely worth a visit. These twin cascades – Upper and Lower Düden – are within easy reach of the city centre, a trip of just 15km.

The upper fall tumbles through a shady green gorge, with plenty of walkways from which to watch its progress. The best view, though, is from the cave that lies right behind the curtain of water – take a picnic and make the most of it. The lower waterfall crashes directly off the rocky cliffside into the ocean and is equally impressive.

There are also some excellent hiking trails, some more challenging than others, so keen walkers will enjoy exploring away from the beaten track.

A national treasure

The Antalya area is home to several of Turkey’s national parks, each boasting their own unique attractions.

Köprülü Canyon (Kurp-roo-loo), high in the mountains, has something for everyone. The scenery is rugged and dramatic, with walks for every age and ability. Mountain climbers can scale challenging rock faces, while the Köprü River is one of Turkey’s most famous white-water rafting spots.

The canyon itself is one of the longest in the country and reaches a height of 400m in some places. It is home to a wide range of flora and fauna – perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

Also worth visiting is Mount Güllük-Termessos National Park (Gool-look Tur-mess-os), which takes its name from Mount Güllük and the ancient city of Termessos. Lying some 20km or so from Antalya centre, it’s a haven for wildlife. Mountain goats and deer live across the reserve, while the well-preserved ruins of Termessos are a must-see. Built on a natural platform at an altitude of more than 1,000m, the city is concealed by pine forests and has a peaceful atmosphere.
